Hi, it’s time to start writing more. I’m going to call this Sauvage, which means savage in French. This is pretentious, but I both speak French and am pretentious, so it feels fitting. It’s also an ode to all things wild, be that the great outdoors (my happy place) or just the fact that the more I look at the world, the more unhinged it appears to be. 30 year olds who build billion dollar companies only to run them into the ground? Wild. Promising 26 million Americans student loan forgiveness and then leaving them on read? Wild. Dating in New York City? Wild.
I would venture the belief that humans have always been chaotic but we now have the tools to document our chaos - and that of everyone else - leading us to occasionally be overwhelmed by how insane the world appears to be. But also, maybe we’re actually just getting dumber? And is the way we use new media tools good for us? We live in a world where social media influencers get paid more than academics. A world that is more connected, but lonelier, than ever before. A world where information online has the capacity to sway elections because not enough people are paying attention to how true or false it is. These are the kinds of things I think about a lot, which is very on brand for me but also makes me feel mildly insane at times. Wild!
And so… Sauvage. In this column I will explore topics related to tech, politics & culture. It is mostly an excuse for me to write about things which I find fascinating and/or alarming and/or both. I suspect that the bulk of what I will write about will revolve around social media, DAOs, and new ways tech is influencing culture, for better or worse (which I know is subjective). If these things are of interest to you, don’t hesitate to reach out.
I hope you follow along, and I hope it gives you pause to reflect if you do. Here’s to all the things wild and absurd in the world. Welcome to Sauvage.
P.S. please enjoy the cover photo that contains pieces of media I think are absurd. It took way too long to make but was also one of the highlights of my week which is concerning. I have individually hyperlinked every asset to give credit to the creators but unfortunately links only show up if I export as a PDF - I’m trying to find a way around this. Please take a moment to appreciate the level of effort that went into this. Thank you.
